Named after the ancient city in Syria and originally called “Swift’s Landing and the “District of Tolland,” Palmyra is on the south border of Monroe County and at one point had a larger population than Rochester itself. Palmyra, which has be around for over 200 years has had a wide arrange of events such as tornadoes, floods, fires, fairs celebration, and political battles. A town with more than just strength has surely proven that it will prevail for many more centuries.

Notably, one man, Pliny T. Sexton, donated both parks of Palmyra. The Main Street park was donated in 1917 and his portion of “Prospect Hill,” which he owned too was given to the village, “for public resort and pleasure ground, especially for children.” September  of 1924, Mr. Sexton died and Prospect Hill Park was renamed in his honor on Juanuary 11, 1935. Two other significant residents that were apart of Palmyra’s respectable community were Joe Smith, founder of the Mormon Religion and Issac Singer of Singer Sewing Machines.
